The transportation problem, as a particular case of a linear programme, has probably the highest relative frequency with which appears in applications, and the maritime container transportation problem is an important particular case of it. The transportation problem, as a particular case of a linear programme, has probably the highest relative frequency with which appears in applications, and the maritime container transportation problem is an important particular case of it. Far from being a comprehensive and exhaustive monograph on this field, our book is strictly oriented to the numerical solution of such types of problems, with emphasis on the unbalanced and inconsistent ones (i.e. when the set of classical feasible solutions is empty and least squares ones has to be considered). This type of problems may appear in practice and the classical linear programming solution techniques cannot handle the inconsistency difficulty. The book addresses to two main categories of readers: first of all, to people working directly in the real world context of maritime transportation problems, as ship crews, ship owners, port workers, container terminal workers, and the second one including researchers (Master and PhD studentsor higher level) working in the field of design and development of new and efficient numerical methods for the special case of unbalanced and inconsistent problems.
