Johann P. Hebel, 10.5.1760 Basel - 22.9.1826 Schwetzingen. Nach dem frühen Tod seiner Eltern, die im Dienst eines Basler Patrizierhauses standen, ermöglichten ihm Vormund und Gönner den Besuch des Karlsruher Gymnasium illustre (1774-78) und das Studium der protestantischen Theologie in Erlangen (1778-80). Nach dem Staatsexamen war er zunächst als Pfarrgehilfe in Hertingen, dann als Lehrer in Lörrach (1783-91) tätig, bis er 1791 eine Stelle als Subdiakon am Karlsruher Gymnasium erhielt (1792 Hofdiakon, 1798 a. o. Professor, 1808 Direktor). Als er 1814 in die ev. Ministerialkommission berufen wurde, gab er die Stelle des Direktors auf, unterrichtete aber weiter. 1819 folgte die Ernennung zum Prälaten der ev. Landeskirche; damit war er zugleich Mitglied des Landtags und der kirchlichen Generalsynode. 1821 ehrte ihn die Universität Heidelberg mit dem Dr. h. c.
