Isabel Allende, geboren 1942 in Lima/Peru, ging nach Pinochets Militärputsch am 11. September 1973 ins Exil. 1982 erschien ihr erster Roman "Das Geisterhaus", der zu einem Welterfolg und 1993 vom dänischen Regisseur Bille August verfilmt wurde. Allende arbeitete unter anderem als Fernseh-Moderatorin und war Herausgeberin verschiedener Zeitschriften. Heute lebt sie mit ihrer Familie in Kalifornien.
Im Jahr 2011 wurde ihr der Hans-Christian-Andersen-Literaturpreis, einer der wichtigsten Literaturpreise Dänemarks, verliehen.
