Barbara was for many years a professional Tutor in the Detroit area. She felt the need for something extra to be used with some of her students. With Sam Blumenfeld's blessing, she created this Phonics Workbook to accompany Blumenfeld's two phonics reading instruction books. The Phonics Workbook has 53 pages and offers extra practice exercise for every lesson in either of the two instruction textbooks. Some special features of the Phonics Workbook are: (1.) General overall instructions, (2.) Numerous practice Tests plus Answers included (3.) Syllabication Section with 7 pages of instruction and practice on learning how to divide words into syllables (which is very helpful in learning to read and in developing an enlarged vocabulary), (4.) Exercises include many interesting, reinforcing and skill building exercises like: fill in the missing word, find the misspelled word, circle the word that has a certain feature in it such as a silent (h), plurals vs. singulars, match words that go together from a list of words, circle a correct word after being given a clue, underline words containing a long vowel, determine what letter is missing from the word and many others. Barbara Simkus tutored in the suburban Detroit, Michigan, area for many years. She has written several other books beside the Alpha-Phonics and How To Tutor Phonics Workbook to accompany Sam Blumenfeld's books. She created the two Arithmetic Workbooks and the Cursive Handwriting Workbook which are designed to accompany the Arithmetic and Handwriting sections of Sam Blumenfeld's classic text: How to Tutor (Which, of course, includes his wonderful systematic, intensive phonics reading instruction program). The long years of experience as a Tutor helped Mrs. Simkus write a Phonics Practice Workbook that truly covers all the bases. Professional Tutors, like Mrs. Simkus, usually only get the tough teaching assignments so her experience over the years prepared her to write Workbooks that zeroed in on the most important needs students have, especially those struggling to learn to read...or do Arithmetic or learn Handwriting. The Phonics Workbook I purchased to help me teach my son to read, along with the Paradigm Company's Alpha-Phonics book, was invaluable to me. My son was not learning to read in school so I tried the Alpha-Phonics after reading about in on the internet. At first he still found it hard to learn what I was trying to teach him. Then I purchased the Phonics Workbook from the same publisher and found that it was a wonderful help, I would even say a Godsend. By showing him the lesson in Alpha-Phonics first, then showing him some extra practice work on the same lesson in the Workbook, he really began to take off! We eventually finished both books, the Workbook and Alpha-Phonics. He is now an above grade level reader.
