Aluminium is the most abundant metal known for its neurotoxicity in humans. It has been reported to be involved in the etiology of several neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease. This book provides the effectiveness of nitric oxide synthase inhibitors in modulating the toxicity induced by aluminum injections in rats on the biochemical, behavioral and morphological changes. Pretreatment with nitric oxide synthase inhibitors prevented the behavioural deficits induced by aluminium, meaning that they may prevent learning and memory deficits on this model of Alzheimer's disease. Results of this book should help in understanding the protective effects of nitric oxide synthase inhibitors against the cellular damage caused by aluminium-induced oxidative stress. Book will also show that nitric oxide synthase inhibitors are worthy of investigation as a potential supplements in the treatment of neurological disorders, in which case oxidative stress effects are minimized.

Autor

Ivana D. Stevanovic graduated molecular biology and physiology at the Faculty of Sciences. Field area of research is the study of the molecular basis of the selective vulnerable neurons death in experimental models of neurodegenerative diseases. She works at the Institute for Medical Research at the Military Medical Academy in Belgrade.
