Distraction osteogenesis has been employed in the lengthening of long bones for the last 100 years . During the last 50 years, predictable results having been developed through scientific studies by the Russian surgeon, Gevriel Ilizarov . While no controlled long-term studies exist with any of the commercially available alveolar bone devices available today, excellent case reports and animal studies exist for the distraction devices currently available.
