Eminent Odia novelist and short story writer Basanta Kumari Patnaik (15 December 1923 - 29 March 2013) was born in Bhanjanagar and spent most of her life in Cuttack. Her works include Amada Bata (1950), Chorabali (1973) and Alibha Chita (novels), Sabhyatara Saja (1950), Patala Dheu (1952) and Jivanchinha (1959) (short story collections), Chintanala (1956) and Taranga (poetry collections), Juara Bhatta (1952) and Mrugatrushna (1956) (plays). Amada Bata has been made into a memorable film. She was awarded "Atibadi Puraskar", the highest award of the Odisha Sahitya Academy.
