The collection of these papers were first presented at a conference which took place from June 3rd to 5th, 1992 at the Ebernburg in Bad Münster am Stein and was dedicated to a reconsideration of the objectives and institutional repercussions of American Studies in the wider context of cultural and political changes in Europe and the USA.
The participants came from West and East Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the USA, and represented disciplines ranging from literary and cultural studies to history, political science. geography, Women's Studies, Latin American Studies and New Literatures in English.
The volume is organized in three parts:
'Re-Viewing American Studies in West and East Germany'
'Reconceptualizing American Studies: -Culture - History - America'
'Politics of American Studies: Intercultural Dimensions and Transnational Perspectives'.
