"In a small town in central Virginia, during the summer of 1958, something took place that is now forgotten or dismissed by the few who are still around to recall it. A local church burned to the ground on an early June morning. One who wasn't even born at the time, has found it a fascinating legend and has tried to decipher the truths from the myths. Mansion Springs, the town that saw it all happen back in the day, still has descendants who knew the people and the places that were involved. The minister of a neighboring church, back in the 50s, Rev. Og Shaffer, finds himself knee-deep in a situation that threatens not just his church building, but possibly the lives of some of his congregation. One person holds the answer, but it takes the contribution of many of the local citizenry to peel away the deceptions in order to get to the core of the truth. Among the ashes, real and emblematic, the story unfolds through some colorful characters and plenty of conflict along the way. What they don't say to one another is as revealing as what they do say. For sometimes silence rings truer than planned words and attitudes. Among the Ashes is a tale about real folks, in a real time, in a decade that has left its mark on our hearts. This is a classic Don Reid book that observes the culture, the music, the lifestyle, the warmth, and the realism of that era. This story and these people will leave you reflective and wanting to go back and hear more"--
