Walter Alleyne Ireland was a British traveler and author who wrote about the tropical countries of the British empire. He was born in Manchester on January 19, 1871, and died on December 23, 1951. His mother was a biographer named Annie Elizabeth Nicholson Ireland, and his father was a reporter named Alexander Ireland. His brother was a musician named John Ireland. Frances Alleyne Ireland went to school at Manchester Grammar School and the University of Berlin. He then traveled to Australia, Canada, India, Burma, the Malay Peninsula, Java, Borneo, French Indo-China, the Philippines, the West Indies, and British Guiana. Between 1902 and 1904, he wrote twelve pieces for the Times of London about how the British ran their colonies in the tropics. He gave talks at Cornell University, the University of Chicago, and the Lowell Institute. He also worked for the New York World. Alleyne Ireland was one of Joseph Pulitzer's private secretaries. He wrote about this time in his book an Adventure with a Genius: Recollections of Joseph Pulitzer.
