India ranks worlds first milk producer country with annual milk production of 102.0 million tonnes but the per capita availability even than would be woefully low at 246 gm./day. Rajasthan is the first largest state of Indian union possessing about 12 per cent livestock population of the country. The milk production in the state was 9783 thousand tonnes in the year 2007-08. Rajasthan Co-operative Dairy Federation (RCDF) is biggest federation as far as milk production and procurement are concerned in the state. This federation consists of 19 milk unions. Out of these, Uttari Rajasthan Sahkari Dugdh Utapadak Sangh Ltd. (URMUL) is situated in Bikaner district of Rajasthan. It was established on 29 August 1972. At present the URMUL dairy union has divided the district in 33 milk procurement routes by which the milk is to be collected from the dairy co-operative societies. The union is engaged in regular activities of procurement, processing and marketing of milk and its products. It also provides extension services like breeding (A.I.) and health care to the members of dairy co-operative societies.
