Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) is an attempt to provide a quality education to all children through active participation of community with a mission approach. Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) is an attempt to provide a quality education to all children through active participation of community with a mission approach. SSA programme was implemented in some of the primary schools in Tamil Nadu with effect from the academic year 2002-2003. In order to achieve universal elementary education, the Government of Tamil Nadu in co-ordination with the Government of India came forward to implement the programme. It was decided initially to implement this scheme in 22 districts of Tamil Nadu. Many new schools have been opened in each district of the state. Starting residential schools and alternative schools are some of the provisions available as per the SSA scheme with provide all basic facilities. It would be interesting and also useful to see as to how this scheme has influenced to development of the primary education. This is important to prepare the education to face the future opportunities. It is in this direction the present study has been set. Mattur taluk, one of the economically active regions in Salem district of Tamil Nadu state, has been chosen as a realistic context to look into the performance of the SSA programme.
