Throughout the history, it is observed that the spatial environments as well as the culture of shopping centers have played an important role in human life. At the beginning, they were located at city centers and they have become a part of social life. However together with the industrialization period, the ongoing shopping activity have changed to end up with consumer cultures. In this book, the historical evolution of shopping spaces has been examined in their physical, spatial and cultural frame. Shopping centers can be grouped as the ones at the city center and out of center . The shopping malls at the city center which are the focus points of this study, have been examined from three points of view as location , type , and consumer culture . As a result of comparative analysis of shopping malls of three global cities-London, New York, Tokyo- throughout the history, some advise are given for new shopping malls to be built at city centers according to cultural, historical and physical context.
