A catalogue of 2,308 items of an important collection of books dealing with 'popular medicine' in early America. Popular medical books, the substance of this collection, made an important contribution to people's health and were often the only help available to large parts of the population where professional medicine was, for whatever reason, difficult of access. The collection spans a period of two hundred years; the books are written primarily by people with professional competence, and offer guidance to lay persons on anatomy, physiology, hygiene and sanitation. They cover reproduction and baby-care, special health needs of women, and sexually transmitted diseases; they advise on exercise and recreation; and they give guidance for treating all manner of sickness and injury. Their evidence for the history of medicine in modern times, and for changing attitudes in society, is copious and revealing.
