The books looks at the factors that led to Zimbabwe adopting the ESAPs ans the key ministries that adopted the program namely the security ministries and Ministry of Finance. Although the program ended in 1995, what makes the book very interesting is that the effects of ESAPs continue to be felt up to date especially that of opening the democratic space though giving birth to opposition political parties and like minded Civil Society Organisations. The multiparty system which is being embraced now is as a result of the ESAPs programs. Since 1995, the ruling ZANU PF party continue to decline in terms of support hence resorting to unorthodox means such as state militarisation. More so the book looks at the reaction of the state to the effects of ESAPs such as capturing the judiciary amongst other arms of government so as to maintain grip to power.
