The purpose of this research is to examine the effects of the Republic of the Philippines (RP) and the United States (US) cooperation on counterterrorism and how the Philippine government/Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) by way of policy or strategy can effectively combat terrorism--a shared interest by both countries. This research centers on one key issue: What will be the ramifications of continued US-RP cooperation in the Global War on Terror on future US-RP relations? Already the two countries have demonstrated divergent concerns and approaches to GWOT. For example, the early volunteerism of the Philippines in sending a contingent to Iraq advanced RP's support in fighting terrorism in consonance to that of the US. However, the subsequent decision of the Philippines to withdraw its contingent in order to satisfy domestic concerns collided with US interest. This research is important to the Armed Forces of the Philippines because policy and strategy might be derived to effectively combat terrorism and possibly accelerate the ending of the Philippines' long-running insurgencies.
