The establishment of Regional Rural Banks in India represents an innovation in Indian banking system. The innovation is not only with respect to institutional form but also with respect to objectives, functions, area of operation and its clientele. For this reason this new type of bank can be regarded as a specialized institution which is distinct from commercial banks as well as co-operative credit institutions. After the passing of Regional Rural Bank Act, 1976 several RRBs were established in different regions of India. One such new type of bank was also established for the districts of Bankura, Purulia and Midnapore in West Bengal on April 9,1976 in order to meet the credit needs of the rural poor and also to mobilize deposits in the rural sector of these districts. This bank is the Mallabhum Gramin Bank. The present book is the result of my research work which evaluated the working of Mallabhum Gramin Bank during the last ten years of its service from the year 1995-96.
