David R. Bird was born in London during the Second World War. At the age of 18, having completed one year of art studies, he became tired of Britain's climate and impulsively emigrated to the British colony of Southern Rhodesia where he joined the British South Africa Police. This was the beginning of a life of travel which resulted in his living on three continents, in five different countries and visiting well over forty. He has been both a civil servant and an entrepreneur, and his pastimes include art, and a number of sporting activities including rowing, running, cycling and tennis. Now retired, he lives with his wife Bonnie in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
