Dental caries is a cyclic event with period of demineralisation and remineralisation. The remineralisation process is a natural repair mechanism to restore the minerals again in ionic forms to the hydroxyapetite crystal lattice. This occurs under near neutral pH condition whereby calcium and phosphate mineral ions are redeposited within the carious lesion from saliva and plaque fluid resulting in the formation of new hydroxyapetite crystals which are resistant to acid dissolution. Literature review pertaining to the use of remineralising agents in the oral cavity has shown significant positive results with their efficacious properties and have found their way to be used clinically. Their is a variety of remineralising agents from flouride to non flouride, resins, lasers and naturals as well, but which is the best to use clinically is a dilemma. However, to extrapolate their advantageous effects more trials both in vivo and in vitro with larger sample size and longer follow ups with these agents should be performed. hence, the aim of this composition is to give an insight of remineralising agents in dentistry and their clinical significance.
