The word Verrucopapillary lesions (VPL) refers to a variety of lesions in the oral region, ranging from benign to completely malignant tumours. They cause surface changes that can be seen as ulcerative, vesiculobullous, or papillary/papular/polypoid lesions, altering the usual morphology and stability of the mucosa. While these clinical manifestations share similar histopathological characteristics, there are also subtle differences that can cause diagnostic difficulties. These verrucopapillary lesions are quite common in the oral and para-oral regions, representing 3% of biopsied oral lesions. Clinical information and an adequate biopsy are essential for making an accurate diagnosis of these lesions, but the primary objective must be to evaluate the epithelium for dysplastic features and signs of invasion. The differentiation and the diagnosis of these lesions is based upon the histopathological features and clinical correlation. Therefore, biopsy is usually indicated to secure a definitive diagnosis and to follow a proper treatment plan.
