This book is a step by step tutorial on how to design a high performance analog to digital converter (ADC). There are several ways designing ADCs based on applications. Some ADCs are designed for precision, which require high number of bits. Portable device requires low power consumption, whereas real-time applications need high speed ADCs. In certain applications, the ADC needs to be high precision and high speed while maintaining low power consumption. Instead of designing with one objective in mind, the design combines several important functions of the ADC. Here after review and discussion on the all types of ADCs then planned design approach for a high performance flash ADC. Such trade-off throughout the design process requires intuition and experience to reach an acceptable compromise. Any improvement in flash ADC will significantly improves the current ADC technology. This study at the final stage proposes new design techniques for high speed and low power applications to produce a 4-bit 7 GS/s CMOS high speed flash ADC. Two new novel comparators are proposed to improve ADC performance. Each part of the flash ADC incorporates technique to further improve its performance.
