Generating electricity from solar energy can be used even during periods of lower solar radiation. In this way, as well as being a renewable source and reducing or zeroing out the local utility's energy consumption, it also helps to reduce costs and allows the return on investment to happen long before the useful life of the photovoltaic system ends.
