While South Africa finds itself grappling with the remnants of its unsavoury past, the world finds itself on the cusp of yet another industrial revolution, the Fourth Industrial Revolution or the Digital Revolution. As is the case with many industrial revolutions preceding it, the Digital Revolution or Fourth Industrial Revolution is expected to bring about an era of great abundance and wealth; however, experts also warn that it could also lead to divisive forces in economies globally. The Fourth Industrial Revolution would be the first industrial revolution - since the very first in the 18th century - in which all South Africans can participate without restrictions imposed by exclusionary and oppressive political systems. It is the aim of this research to provide an analysis of whether the Digital Revolution or Fourth Industrial Revolution could play a strategic role in South Africa's endeavour to achieve economic transformation.
