The study tests the hypothesis that if responsibility for replacement of engines, transmissions, clutches, and steering gear assemblies for the M151 1/4-ton truck series was moved to organizational level, there would be significant cost savings. The history of automotive maintenance management is examined. Tool and training cost implications are investigated. A computer simulation generates direct support maintenance requirements, costs, and tests results for statistical significance.
