Without urgent action, global waste will increase by 70% by 2050 compared to current levels.Driven by rapid urbanization and population growth, annual global waste generation is expected to increase to 3.4 billion tonnes over the next 30 years, compared to 2.01 billion tonnes in 2016. In the following elaboration, a mapping of 11 disposable plastics is proposed, and an analysis is developed to assess whether a transition to alternative and multi-purpose materials to disposable plastics can contribute to the reduction of marine waste and the reduction of environmental impact. The analysis is based on today's consumption of disposable plastics, and the amount of waste generated in relation to the two scenarios described below: 1) A complete transition for non-plastic single-use products;2) A complete transition to multi-purpose items. This approach sets out the environmental, economic and social impacts of measures that can be used to facilitate the switch to products made of alternative materials to disposable plastics.
