Born in Bolzano, South Tyrol, Guerra started his career at Veneto club Hellas Verona. He made his Serie A debut on 15 September 1991, against Internazionale. he substituted Marino Magrin in the 59th minutes. He also played his second appearance on 3 November 1991, replaced Paolo Piubelli in the 53rd minutes. The match Verona 1-1 draw with Parma. After Verona relegated in June 1992, Guerra left for Serie C1 side Salernitana. In 1993 94 season, Guerra returned to Verona, which he became a regular starter at Serie B.
