This book bears witness to the inexhaustible cultural wealth of African peoples. Inspired by a social fact, funerals among the Senoufo, the book highlights the theatrical aspects of the socio-anthropological and political realities of this people. Although death strikes all peoples, they do not all have the same way of living through these tragic moments. From the celebration of death, through the organization of funerals, the Senufo celebrate life. The ritual practices of dance, music and song that result from this, very often integrate a staging that takes on the allure of a theatrical stage. On the profane or sacred rituals represented, the ritualistic actors construct participatory theatrical-type shows. In a word, these theatrical performances, which aim to purify the community and the soul of the deceased in his or her journey to the afterlife, are indicative of individual and collective therapy.
