Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Medicine - Pharmacology, Pharmacy, grade: A, , course: Department of Laboratory Technology, language: English, abstract: This work evaluated the aqueous extract of inflorescences, leaves and roots of Hetropium inddicum linn for its anti-helminthic and insecticidal properties. The extracts were prepared using Asumeng¿s protocol (Asumeng, et al, 2012). The prepared crude extracts were subjected to photochemical screening using standard techniques of plant secondary metabolites. The extracts were tested for alkaloid, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, Anthraquinones, reducing sugars (in glycosides) cardiac glycosides, and glycosides. Evaluation of anti-helminthic effect of the plant extracts showed that, although all the three screened plant extracts exhibit anti-helminthic activity, the leaf extract appears to have high anti-helminthic effect than the inflorescence and the root extracts. The inflorescence extract had more anti-helminthic activity than the root extract, and this activity increases as concentration increases for each extract. It was also found from the results that the extracts have no effect on the weevil (Sitophilus Zeamais).
