Infectious diseases continue to be a global concern, causing about 25% of the total deaths occurring worldwide. Infectious diseases continue to be a global concern, causing about 25% of the total deaths occurring worldwide. The problem has been hugely aggravated by the emergence of multi-drug resistant bacteria even in the Europe and USA, although the incidences are significantly higher in the developing countries with burgeoning population burden and poor sanitation. Regrettably, discovery of antibiotics has failed to counteract the propagation of microbial drug resistance; hence, new strategies are required to control bacterial infections without further delay. Thus, plant products, either as pure compounds or as standardized plant extracts, could be of great significance, particularly for countries like India. Hopefully, some of the phytochemicals have already been demonstrated as prospective antimicrobials when used alone, and also as synergists or resistance modifier of other antimicrobial agents. The study is expected to reveal a new generation of alternative therapy derived from natural sources with relevance to current clinical scenario.
