The battle between bacteria and their susceptibility to drugs is a major problem among researchers, clinicians and drug companies who are looking for effective drugs and requires extensive continuous surveillance programs for emergence of new resistant strains in addition to research and development in the field of prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of these infections effectively. In developing countries (e.g. Egypt) postoperative wound infections have become serious problem due to poor infection control programs, crowding hospital environment and uncontrolled prescription of antimicrobial agents. In Egypt, local protocols for prescribing antimicrobials are not only deficient or nearly absent but also lacking local evidence based on studies conducted in the hospitals.
