This study deals with the valorization of a fruit tree called Zizyphus lotus L. (Rhamnacées) known in the region of Tlemcen under the vernacular name Sedra. It is a useful plant, in popular medicine, to treat the digestive tract, the liver and respiratory diseases. It is known for its anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcerogenic, analgesic and anti-diabetic activities. We have demonstrated that the different parts of this plant have antioxidant properties and are rich in antioxidant vitamins A and C and polyunsaturated fatty acids of the n-3 family. We found that different extracts of this plant, particularly the pulp, have an immunosuppressive effect on human T cells. We also found that in rats made diabetic by the administration of streptozotocin that the two aqueous extracts, pulp and stem, decrease hyperglycemia and correct more or less the antioxidant status of these animals. In conclusion, Zizyphus lotus L. can be used in the treatment of certain diseases associated with immune systemdysfunction related to inflammation and diabetes.
