Dr Sharaf is an ant systematists interested in studying the Egyptian ant fauna. In 2006, he completed his Ph.D. thesis revising the Egyptian Formicidae and giving 147 species and subspecies. In 2009. Dr Sharaf had an assistant Professor position at King Saud University where he became interested in studying the ant species of Arabia.
