A young man and a young woman fall in love. They have never met each other. The young man, Jessie Woods, had been turned out on the world at age eighteen and is making his mark on everything he encounters. The young woman, Ruth Branson, is using her skills as an airplane pilot to support World War II. Soon Jessie will also find that his skills are required to support the war effort. The two first cross paths at a bar near an airplane factory of CH-47 transport planes, which she flies. Ruth is a member of WASP (Women's Airforce Service Pilots). They ferry planes to whatever location is required during the war in the United States, England, and Hawaii. The bar at Tinker and its bartender are used to leave letters and messages for each other. Every time they arrange to meet face-to-face at the bar, the war gets in the way. It's not until the end of the war that they meet face-to-face. After they are discharged from the military, they go to Montana and live with Ruth's family. Her father is rich and very influential in Montana politics. Jessie goes on to build a successful plane repair business and sells it after twenty years. Now Jessie needs a new interest, so his father-in-law talks him into running for the US Senate. Ruth stays in Montana raising their two children, and Jessie goes to Washington. Jessie finds that Washington is full of individuals who only have their own interests at heart. Jessie uncovers that the corruption goes right to the top. Jessie looks into the murder of a senator and uncovers the corruption that destroys the people involved. He gets his fill of Washington and resigns. He returns to Montana and, together with Ruth, takes over running the ranch for her father.
