The study; Appraisal of online social network (twitter) on the academic performance of students of tertiary institutions: A study of Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi takes a look at how effective is the use and limitation of social media on students¿ academic performance. The Use and Gratification theory and the Media equation Theory were applied to examine the effect of Social Media on the Academic performance of tertiary institutions students. Based on the survey conducted among the students of the university in Makurdi, the researcher realized that social media has impacted on academic performance and has provided a whole effective means for interactive learning in the tertiary institutions. Based on these findings, the researcher recommends among others that Social networking sites should be expanded and new pages should be created to enhance academic activities to avoid setbacks in the students¿ academic performance.
