"Almost everyone in the world knows something about Arizona, and some of it is even true. From ancient cliff dwellings to cutting-edge bio-tech industries, Arizona's history is unique and often misunderstood. Even before the railroad brought an end to the great American frontier, dime novels and Wild West shows made up their own history of the Southwest. Those legends are great, and we never tire of them, but there's always more to learn, and when it comes to Arizona history, the truth is still stranger and more interesting than fiction. From Tombstone to the Grand Canyon and everything in between, Jim Turner takes us from dinosaur tracks to conquistadors to the Harvey Girls to the mountain men. The railroad, population booms, mining, and the Five Cs: copper, cattle, cotton, citrus, and climate, all have parts to play. As do the rich cultures of many Native American peoples. The text is packed with information and there are fascinating images throughout to help with understanding particular times and places and people. Whether you are a native Arizonan, long-time resident, or new arrival, we hope this book gives you new appreciation for your state. If you live elsewhere, we hope it encourages you to visit for the first time or reminds you to return"--
