The history of the state exuberantly told, from the Spanish rule, French Empire, territorial lawlessness, to its brawling statehood; from its isolated and tragic participation in the Confederacy to the schism of reconstruction and peace; from mountaineers and sharecroppers to its playtimes. The author combines the value of factual material with the fascination of folk tale, comic interludes, and highlighted personalities. Specific geographical appeal, plus general appeal of vitality and style. (Kirkus Reviews)
