In the past 30 years, subdivisions, allowed by the expanding urban-growth boundary, have been built on former farmlands. This density accommodates the housing needs of the Portland, Oregon, metropolitan area, including those employed by nearby companies Intel and Nike.

Donald R. Nelson is a historical writer and has self-published photographic histories of the Portland area. He has lived with his family in the Bethany area for over 40 years and has interviewed dozens of descendants of early settlers. The author has photographed the Bethany area since 1975. Around Bethany is his first book for Arcadia Publishing. It features photographs from the Washington County Museum, family collections, and the author's collection.
