The production of debris due to wear of articulating surfaces on metallic and polymeric temporomandibular joint implants has contributed to the low success rate of these dental devices. Use of artificial diamond coatings might improve the wear resistance of the articulating surfaces. This publication describes the basics of temporomandibular joint and disorders, types of diamond-like coatings, the process of diamond growth, and how to increase the long term durability of TMJ devices and the impact of a reliable mandibular simulation machine on in vitro wear tests, and different methods for measuring the interface toughness and bonding strength of artificial diamond coatings on titanium alloys.
