Autorenporträt
Welcome to a journey through the transformative landscape of disruptive technologies, a subject that has not only defined my three-decade career in the IT space but also shapes our collective future. My name is Nick Kalargyros, and I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the ascendancy of innovations that have revolutionized industries and created unprecedented opportunities. Throughout my career, I've embraced the changes brought about by disruptive technologies-from the early days of personal computing to the current era dominated by artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things. These technologies have been a boon, not only for enhancing business efficiencies and fostering new economic opportunities but also for driving human progress in ways previously unimaginable. However, as we stand on the brink of what many are calling the Age of Automation, I find myself grappling with a profound concern. For the first time, I observed a trend that is both unsettling and paradoxical: humans are beginning to lose control of the very robots and systems we've engineered. This shift is not merely operational but deeply influential on the fabric of our society and personal lives. My apprehension is not about the existence or the utilization of AI itself-technology that I, too, have championed and benefitted from-but about the pace at which it is being integrated into our lives and trusted with decisions of monumental importance. There is an undeniable rush in adopting AI, a rush accompanied by a confidence that may not fully account for the need for checks and balances in systems that are capable of self-directed operation. More alarmingly, the rapid deployment of AI across various sectors lacks a comprehensive transition plan for workers displaced by automation. This oversight could lead to a sharp rise in unemployment, with far-reaching implications that may culminate in economic and deflationary collapse. This book is born out of the necessity to address these swift changes. It aims to discuss the less examined consequences of letting AI systems permeate so deeply into our business operations, financial markets, and personal spaces without adequate oversight. The fear is not just that AI might make mistakes-after all, no system is perfect-but that once these technologies are set loose, we might not possess sufficient understanding or capability to correct their courses or even recognize errors before they precipitate significant impacts.
