It is quite rare to find Eliot linked to German Romanticism, particularly its early version. This study Shifts the emphasis from English Romanticism to Early German Romanticism (the Jena circle) and attempts a reading of Eliot based on this shift.The aesthetics introduced by Friedrich Schlegel, especially his formulation of irony, are of central importance to this approach.
