1836. Washington Irving was the first American literary artist to earn his living solely through his writings and is considered to be the Father of the American Short Story. In the course of his visits to Canada, Irving became acquainted with the principals of the great Northwest Fur Company. At the request of John Jacob Astor he agreed to give an account of the nature and extent of the enterprise, which is to be found in this volume.
