Joshua Foer ist in Washington, D.C. geboren und studierte Wissenschaftsjournalismus in Yale. Er arbeitet als freier Journalist u.a. für die New York Times, Washington Post und Slate. Er ist der jüngere Bruder der erfolgreichen Autoren Franklin Foer und Jonathan Safran Foer. Als Joshua Foer die USA Memory Championships als Journalist begleitete, konnte er beobachten, dass nicht besondere Gedächtnisgaben ausschlaggebend für den Erfolg der Wettkämpfer waren, sondern ihre Techniken des Memorierens. So kam ihm die Idee, selbst sein Gedächtnis zu trainieren und an den Championships teilzunehmen - und er gewann.
