Dylan Thomas (Swansea, Gales, 1914-Nueva York, 1953) fue poeta, autor de cuentos y guionista que alcanzó gran celebridad con sus intervenciones radiofónicas en la BBC londinense. Heredero de la tradición poética galesa, este hombre de vida intempestiva y temeraria estuvo marcado, en lo literario, por la poesía metafísica de los maestros ingleses del siglo XVII, la mirada visionaria y audaz de William Blake y, en menor medida, por la huella del imaginario surrealista. Sus lecturas públicas le valieron un gran reconocimiento, tanto en su país natal como en Estados Unidos, adonde viajó en tres ocasiones; la última de ellas contempló la lectura de Bajo el bosque lácteo. Su obra poética, breve dado lo prematuro de su muerte, abarca 18 Poemas (18 Poems) (1934), Veinticinco poemas (Twenty-five Poems) (1936), El mapa del amor (The Map of Love) (1939) y, sobre todo, Muertes y entradas (Deaths and Entrances) (1946). En el dormir campestre (In Country Sleep) es uno de sus poemas últimos e inacabados, como también es de póstuma publicación Elegía (Elegy), en la que, arrodillado ante un moribundo, escribe: 'Ve tranquilo a la colina de tu crucifixión'. Thomas falleció en Nueva York, enfermo y devastado por el alcohol, un 9 de noviembre de 1953, a los treinta y nueve años, cuando ya se había comprometido a colaborar con Ígor Stravinski para la escritura de unas arias que el compositor le había solicitado con motivo de una nueva ópera. A menos de un año de la desaparición del poeta, Stravinski escribió, a modo de homenaje, In memoriam Dylan Thomas, para tenor, cuarteto de cuerda y cuarteto de trombones, estrenado en septiembre de 1954.
