It's 1977 and the world appears to be spinning too fast: New York City is trying to shake off the effects of near-bankruptcy, recover from the worst blackout in the city's history, and survive the Summer of Sam. Newark, NJ is not much better off, but at least Jerry Flanagan, a newly minted college grad has made new friends at the bank and they are starting to come together as a team. He's also falling in love for the first time in his life, to a fellow bank trainee, Maria DeMarco. They've only known each other four months, but fate and many things they have in common seem to have brought them together. But before he can win her hand, Jerry must overcome a startling and tragic discovery about another colleague, prevail in a test of wills against an ornery senior bank officer, and convince himself that he can live up to the expectations that others have thrust upon him. He must also emerge from the long shadow cast by his dead brother, whose image he can't shake from his mind. It isn't easy growing up, but he must, and it better be in a hurry.
