Author: U.R. Ananthamurthy (1932-2014) was a distinguished Kannada writer and public intellectual. Samskara and Bharathipura are among his best known novels. He was honoured with the Jnanpith Award in 1994. Translator: Chandan Gowda teaches at the School of Development, Azim Premji University, Bengaluru. He is presently completing a book on the cultural politics of development in old Mysore state.
