Obesity became a worldwide epidemic at the end of the 20th century, with exponential growth rates in the western part of the world, especially in developing countries, such as Brazil. The high cost of the disease to health systems, especially for the treatment of severe obesity (better known as morbid obesity) and its comorbidities represents a considerable part of the total health expenses in Brazil. In this work, we will analyze the main costs and expenses related to bariatric surgeries performed by the Unified Health System (SUS) in residents of the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil, to understand how expensive this treatment can be and how much prevention and public policy actions to reduce and combat the disease are increasingly necessary.
