Autorenporträt
Hereford Brooke George was an English lawyer, historian, professor, and alpinist who lived from 1838 to 1910. He was born in Bath, Somerset, on January 1, 1838. He was the oldest of three children born to surgeon Richard Francis George and his wife Elizabeth Brooke. The other two children were boys and a daughter. In 1849, he became a scholar at Winchester College. In 1856, he was awarded a chair at New College, Oxford. In 1858, he got first classes in both classical and mathematical moderations. The next year, he got a second class in the final classical school and a third class in the final mathematical school. He got his B.A. in 1860 and then his M.A. in 1862. George was admitted to the bar at the Inner Temple on June 6, 1864. He worked as a lawyer on the western circuit until 1867, when he went back to New College to teach in the school of law and history. He became a priest in 1868, but he didn't do any work in a parish. When the law school and the history school were split up in 1872, he became the history teacher at New College and did that job until 1891. A big part of setting up the intercollegiate method of teaching at Oxford was his work.
