Rudolf Leuckart (1822-98) gilt als Begründer der Parasitologie und ist einer der berühmtesten Zoologen des 19. Jahrhunderts. Bereits während seines Studiums der Medizin und Naturwissenschaften in Göttingen galt Leuckarts Hauptinteresse der Zoologie. Seine Habilitationsschrift, in der er eine neue Systematik der wirbellosen Tiere vorstellte, machte ihn erstmals bekannt. Ab 1850 folgte er einem Ruf an das neu eingerichtete Extraordinariat für Zoologie in Gießen, ab 1869 war er Professor in Leipzig.In seiner Leipziger Zeit beendete Rudolf Leuckart auch die Untersuchungen zur Systematik, Morphologie, Fortpflanzung und Entwicklung der parasitischen Würmer diese umfangreiche Forschungsarbeit festigte seinen Ruf als Vater der modernen Parasitologie. Zwischen 1877 und 1892 entwarf Leuckart insgesamt 113 Lehrtafeln, die weltweit in der universitären Lehre verwendet und als German Wandtafeln bzeichnet wurden. Rudolf Leuckarts Name genoß europaweit hohes Ansehen in der Fachwelt. Die Deutsche Zoologische Gesellschaft ernannte ihn zu ihrem ersten Ehrenmitglied
