This textbook and the accompanying workbook is designed to instruct the student in basic uncomplicated nursing procedures to be performed under the supervision of a licensed nurse. The Certified Nurse Assistant will develop skills, attitudes and concepts which are essential to developing the Certified Nurse Assistant. These skills are taught with a holistic approach to include the impact on physical, psychological, social, ethnic, cultural, and environmental influences on the residents continued overall well-being. Becoming a Certified Nurse Assistant requires a basic knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, body systems and the impact of aging on those systems. It also requires specific skills which promote observation, interventions, individualization, resident choice, safety, and in general the overall well-being of the residents the CNA cares for. The course will utilize current federal and state regulations, principles of adult learning, ideas and resources for supplemental lessons and best practice approaches to Certified Nurse Assistant training with a focus on person-centered techniques.

Cheryl Parsons is a registered nurse and licensed nursing home administrator. She began her career as a CNA while pursuing her Associate Degree in Nursing, graduating in 1980. Starting out in hospital nursing. After several years, the calling to return to long term care could no longer be ignored and she returned where she started. She held many positions from charge nurse, to unit supervisor, quality assurance coordinator, MDS Assistant and Staff Development and Education Coordinator. In 1994 she studied and obtained her administrator's license and began her career as a nursing home administrator. Her administrator career spanned over 20 years and resulted in many awards and recognition within the industry and from her work on the Governor's Task Force on Aging. She retuned to school in 2013 and completed her Bachelor of Nursing at University of Missouri's Sinclair School of Nursing. Education continued to draw her back to instructing others that want to embrace health care through their profession and in 2014 she started a company called Staff Development Solutions and created on-line learning formats for long term care staff including the Certified Nurse Assistant course. To date Cheryl has instructed over 1000 students either live or through the online format. Her success rate is exemplary. She also speaks on best practice and regulatory changes to industry leaders and is recognized as a leading champion for person-centered care and the change of the culture of long-term care through positive workforce development. She has authored several books and continues to be highly recognized for her work in the industry. She is a certified CNA Instructor/Examiner, CMT Instructor/Examiner, L1MA Instructor/Examiner, Insulin Instructor/Examiner, and a Certified Train the Trainer for the Instructor/Examiner in all these areas. She has her certification in Dementia Care and in End-Of-Life Care
