In Becoming a Tourist: Travels in Countries That No Longer Exist, Handelman's writing lifts off the page, and he's a genius at simile, allusion, humor, and turning a phrase. There's an intelligent writer behind this narrative, a writer both full of hubris and humility at different periods in his life. --Luella Bryant, author of the novel Beside the Long River, 2022; the history, Hot Springs and Moonshine Liquor, 2020, and other works of fiction and non-fiction.
